In 2009, the Sierran Football Association launched a bid to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup. They were going up against bids from England, a joint-bid of Belgium and The Netherlands, South Vietnam, and joint bid from Latvia and Estonia. More countries, such as Mexico, Superior, and Indonesia also attempted to bid, but failed, with different reasons for each of the countries (Mexico withdrew, Indonesia was disqualified, and Superior failed to submit on time).

It came all down to 5 bids, Sierra, England, Belgium/Netherlands, South Vietnam, and Latvia/Estonia. The FIFA executive committee convened in Zürich, Switzerland and voted, with Sierra winning the 2018 bid, Belgium/Netherlands coming in Second, South Vietnam coming in third, with England and Latvia/Estonia both being eliminated in the first round.
