BR1 (BR Eins) is the flagship television channel of the Baltish Broadcasting Corporation (BR). It became Baltia's first television station when it began broadcasting in 1954.
BR1 focuses on news, current affairs, entertainment, sports and drama in a similar vein to BBC One in the United Kingdom. Besides its own productions, the channel also broadcasts a significant amount of programmes from other European countries, mainly Germany, United Kingdom and the Nordic countries, all in the original language with Baltish subtitles. Its news programme is called BR Neus.
History[edit | edit source]
The first transmissions were made on 6 November 1954 from the Radiohaus in Riga.
Television, known since 1954 as Baltisch Radio, started broadcasting regularly on 22 March 1958 and was renamed to BR Fernsehen. The same day, the newscast Panorama went on air for the first time. Initially the channel broadcast from 19:00 to either 21:00 or 21:30, with an additional period on Sundays between 18:00 and 19:00.
The new television studios for BR Fernsehen were inaugurated in 1964.
In 1968 the first colour broadcast was made using the PAL-system. Also in that same year advertisement between programmes was introduced.
In the 1970s, grew the acquisition of television sets in the country. As a result of this, broadcasting hours increased and new programmes schedules. In 1972, the channel broadcasts from 17:00 to either 23:00 or 23:30.
In 1973, Panorama Nacht, a second daily newscast was launched on weekdays.
In 1979 the last black-and-white television program switched to colour.
On 30 June 1980 BR2 was launched and BR Fernsehen was renamed to BR1 as it is currently known. The two channels were reorganized in 1981. The vast majority of sports broadcasts and young audience programming went from BR1 to BR2. In this year, BR1 started broadcasting at 15:00.
In 1986 broadcasts would usually start around 14:00 and finish shortly before 00:00. In the daytime period, the channel broadcasted mainly reruns of the evening and imported dramas. Teletext also started in 1986.
In 1992 the channel was once again reorganized. Panorama was renamed to BR Neus and a daily afternoon bulletin was scheduled. Gut Morgen Baltia, a news and interviews morning show was launched on weekdays and therefore the channel brodcasted from 7:00 to 9:30 and from 12:00 to midnight. The first regional programme ever in Baltia, BR Neus - Süd from Vilna, saw the start in this year. More regional news programmes launched in 1995 and the entire country was covered by regional news programmes in 1999.
In 1995 broadcast started at 7:00 and finished at 00:00 or 24:30, with no interruptions in the daytime schedule.
In 1996 a new logo and new programme schedules, among other things, were introduced. In the same year, the first edition of Ein Lied for Europa, the Baltish preselection for the Eurovision Song Contest was held.
In 2006 a new reorganization took place and a new set of logos were introduced on all BR channels. The channel started broadcasting at 6:00 and finished approximately at 1:30 or 2:00. In the same year, test card was replaced by Fensterneus on the night period from 1:30-2:00 to 6:00.
In July 2012, coinciding with the Olympic Games, BR1 HD was launched, replacing BR HD.
On 3 September 2018, BR1 starts to broadcast 24 hours a day because Fensterneus is no longer broadcast.
