The Conrad Helfrich-Class Aircraft Carriers were a pair of aircraft carriers built by the Royal Netherlands Navy(RNN) during the 1930s,the HNMLS Conrad Helfrich(DV-1) and HMNLS Lucas de Jong(DV-2),The aircraft carriers used the Barentsz-Class Heavy Cruiser Hull,The ships were the first dutch ships laid down since the London Naval Treaty , and became the first operational aircraft carriers of the Royal Netherlands Navy, and persuaded the general staff that aircraft carriers are actually important for the Fleet in Being Doctrine.
The Conrad Helfrich-Class was designed as an experimental ship on the hull of the successful Brentsz-Class Heavy Cruiser the concept was more of a idea of a cheap carrier, but during a visit of the navy general staff, some of the generals proved interested in the concept of a cheap aircraft carrier, which granted Drumbaar NV funding from the navy to work on the Vliegdekschip project, which later became the Conrad Helfrich-Class,Fokker was specially contracted to design a fighter capable of carrying a torpedo and to have enough power to take off and land on the flight deck, which became the Fokker V.XXI(M) and was completed in 1937.
General Design and Description
The ships had an overall length of 192.50 metres (631.6 ft), a beam of 22 metres (72 ft), and a draft of 8.67 metres (28.4 ft) at mean. ‘’Conrad Helfrich’’ had a standard displacement of 9,000 long tons (9,100 t) at standard load, and 11,500 long tons (11,700 t) at deep load. The bow was an inverted bow, which the dutch could easily produce thanks to the existing ships using that bow.The ship was equipped with one elevator at the rear of the ship, designed specifically to fit the Fokker V.XXI(M).
The Royal Netherlands Navy was not convinced that airplanes would be an effective and efficient armament of the ship thus the design included one 80mm Double barrel,on the stern and two casemate 80mm guns in the bow, both of which were mounted under the flight deck. The 80mm Double barrel could be depreciated to -5° and elevated to +40° and the casemates to -10° and +10° respectively. Both guns fired the same projectiles with a maximum a maximum range of (14,000m) at an elevation of +10° and (30,000m) at +40° elevation.
Conrad Helfrich-Class's anti-air armament was a dozen 13mm Anti-Air Guns and eleven 20mm quad mounts placed throughout the ship, the first having an effective range of (1,500m) and the latter (4,800m),both having the maximum elevation of +85°.
