Islam is a major world religion founded by the prophet Muhammad in 12 BH (610 AD, 4370 AM, 1153 BE) After the prophet's death in 13 AH (635 AD, 4395 AM, 1178 BE) his cousin & adopted son, Ali became caliph. After the disastrous defeat by the Byzantines at the Battle of Takapes in 47 AH (669 AD, 4429 AM, 1212 BE) Ali was ousted & retreated to Iran, retaining rule of only it, Elam & Babylonia. From then on Caliphs were elected from the tribe of Quraysh, and eventually all Arabs & even other Sunni Muslims. Ali's kingdom maintained an inherited line of caliphs.
