Italy is a limited monarchy that takes up all of the Italian peninsula, the islands of Sicily, Sardinia & Corsica and sections of the Balkan Adriatic coast. It is divided into 17 states based on ethnicity. Modern Italy began when Pope Benedict IX successfully broke away from the Roman Empire in 1033. After 4 years ruling as a despot, he was deposed and reforms in Papal election were instituted. Italy remained largely a theocracy after that. In 1106 Pope Paschal II refused to crown his rival Henry V as Holy Roman emperor. On his way back from an expedition against the pope, Henry was posoined by Matilda of Etruria in May 1111. Thereafter the office was called King of Germany (Deutscher Nation)
