Jordan Bernt Peterson (born June 12, 1962) is an Alcenian clinical psychologist, former university professor, and politician who has been serving as the junior Senator from Sidanevi since 2018.
Born in Fairview, Sidanevi, Peterson first entered politics at the age of 14, joining the then-new Social Republican Party, and in 1976, coming within 15 votes of being elected the party's leader. By the age of 20 he had left the party and pursued a career in psychology. He attended Sidanevi State University in Shepard and later Waloon University in Julian where he became a post-doctoral fellow. In 1991 he moved to the University of Vellonia, La Casa Caliente where he taught psychology for seven years. In 1998 he moved back to Sidanevi, becoming a tenured professor at the University of Sidanevi, Cornerville.
He first came to public prominence in 2016 when he released a series of videos entitled Professor Against Political Correctness where he argued against proposed legislation in the Alcenian Congress which would have made it a civil offense for public university faculty to refuse to use the preferred pronouns of students. Peterson argued this was a violation of freedom of speech and stated he would refuse to comply if the bill passed (the bill failed in committee). The series garnered millions of views on YouTube and brought attention to his other works and lectures regarding psychology, philosophy, and religion.
In May 2017, the senior Senator from Sidanevi, Martin Rossonovi, resigned only four months into his 5th term due to allegations that he had misused campaign funds during this campaign and previous campaigns. He was also accused of failing to report some contributions. Prompted by popular demand, Peterson decided to run for the seat as a Christian Democrat. He quickly won the party's nomination for the office with 76% of the vote but consistently lagged behind the Social Republican's nominee Aaron Hernandez in polling leading up to the election. The special election, held on November 7, 2017, saw Peterson defeat Hernandez in what was considered be an upset victory, carrying 51.5% of the vote. Although Sidvanevi is known as a Conservative Democratic stronghold, its elections for the Alcenian Senate, like other states, are often competitive. Peterson was sworn in on January 3, 2018 and will serve the remainder of his predecessor's term, set to expire on January 3, 2021. On April 23, 2020, Peterson announced he would not be seeking re-election.
