Marcus Gutierrez (born August 12, 1955) is a Sierran politician and statesman currently serving as a commissioned senator for the province of Washumko since 2017, previously served as Majority Leader of the Sierran Senate from 2017 until 2020 and is the current Senate Opposition Leader since May 2020. A member of the Royalist Party, Gutierrez is the Chair of the Senate Royalist Caucus and is a vocal supporter of the monarchist movement, a loyalist to the Sierran Monarchy, and has pushed for political pressure targeting the country's republican movement.
Born in the city of Avalon, the capital of the Channel Islands, to a Mexican-Sierran family, Marcus' parents were originally refugees who fled to the Channel Islands and sought refuge in the Kingdom of Sierra from Mexico in response to the oppressive government that reigned over the country at the time. Gutierrez grew up in a Mexican-Sierran community located in Avalon and attended a local high school before eventually graduating in 1973 and attended Mulholland University for his higher education and eventually graduated with a degree in political science in 1979. In 1980, Gutierrez became a committed Catholic which later influenced his political views as time went on. During his college years, he moved to Elko, Washumko and has lived there ever since. In 2014 Marcus ran and won a seat in the Washumko House of Assembly to represent its 14th Assembly district and held the seat until he was appointed the commissioned senator for the province by the provincial governor. His seat was later taken by Tyron Hunter of the Democratic-Republican Party after Marcus became a senator.
Since being appointed the Senator for Washumko, Marcus has played a major role in the Sierran Senate, especially after being elected its Majority Leader by Senate Royalists. Politically, Gutierrez is a social conservative and is opposed to same-sex marriage, legal protections for LGBT people, marijuana legalization and easy access to abortion. Gutierrez has also opposed raising the minimum wage and has called for it to be abolished believing businesses can set their own wages. He's also opposed to any efforts to restrict the powers of the Monarch calling it "political treason against the union" and has been a vocal loyalist for Nemesis Heartwell since the latter became Prime Minister. Gutierrez has also supported integrating the Channel Islands as a province of Sierra along with both crown dependencies.
During the 2020 Sierran Senate elections, Gutierrez had managed to win re-election, but the Royalists suffered a lost of 21 seats decreasing their presence in the Senate down from 51 seats from 2018 to 30 while the Democratic-Republicans secured 45 seats and were thus made the governing party. Gutierrez was later appointed Senate Opposition Leader not long after Heartwell became Leader of the Opposition and accepted the appointment. After being sworn in on May 4, 2020 as Senate Opposition Leader, Gutierrez had pledged he would work with Heartwell and the Royalist-led Opposition to stop the "far-left extremist agenda" by the Social Democrat coalition government under Prime Minister Susan Kwon.

Appointment
Tenure
Not long after Gutierrez was appointed to serve as a commissioned senator for Washumko, he was elected by the Senate Royalist Conference to serve as its chair and eventually serve as Majority Leader of the Sierran Senate. His appointment was thanks in part due to his popularity amongst the Royalist Party establishment, support for Nemesis Heartwell, and advocacy for the conservative movement.
