The National Unity Party has been the biggest political party in Pashtunistan and maintained control of the National Assembly of Pashtunistan for much of the country's recent history. It won the legislative elections of 1999, 2009, and 2014. It only failed to gain a plurality in 2004 and was in the opposition to the ruling coalition led by the Republican Party of Pashtunistan for five years. Although the royal family is legally not allowed to endorse political parties, it is often viewed as the monarchist party. The National Unity Party stands for national conservatism and the monarchy.
Since 2015 the Prime Minister of Pashtunistan has been the leader of the National Unity Party, Abdul Qadir Baryalai.
