Pat & Patrick is a Sierran weekly podcast created by hosts Pat Jacobs and Patrick Newman and streams live on YouTube every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9AM to 12 noon. Established on April 11, 2016, the show features commentary, news, and satire by Jacobs and Newman on current events, with Jacobs offering a right-leaning stance and Newman a left-leaning. The show has received critical acclaim for its humor, providing news and commentary in a fair and unbiased manner, and for the diverse range of guests that have appeared on the show, sometimes multiple times. As of August 2018, the show has aired over 300 episodes and the channel it is hosted on, P & P Broadcasting, has 2.7 million subscribers.

History[edit | edit source]

Pat Jacobs and Patrick Newman met at the University of Sierra, Bernheim in 2006 and had a shared interest in radio, politics, and law. After they both failed to pass the bar exam, they began working at an insurance company, which Jacobs described as "The most stereotypical office job imaginable." Dissatisfied with their occupations, they attempted to pitch an idea for a radio show that was similar in premise to what would become Pat & Patrick. The pair found no interested broadcasting company; Newman recalls "They said our style was oversaturated to hell". Jacobs and Newman decided to start their own podcast after both men pooled in $500 to buy streaming equipment and build a makeshift studio in Newman's garage. Their first episode was titled "Pat and Patrick Tell Stories" (later retitled "The P & P Show Episode 1: Beginnings") and received 15,000 views within its first week. As of August 2018, that episode has 4.5 million views. The episode barely resembles the format most listeners would become familiar with and featured Jacobs and Newman recounting humorous stories from law school, running fifteen minutes in length.

The pilot's success inspired them to continue, this time with a structured format closer to their original pitch. Their first guest was Sandra Chu, their history professor from UoSB.

In July 2018, the duo celebrated their 300th episode.

Format[edit | edit source]

The show, which is livestreamed on YouTube then posted on their channel later, runs for three hours from 9AM to 12 noon, divided into three segments. The first segment has Jacobs and Newman discussing recent events and news stories and providing their commentary, which is both humorous and serious in nature. The two men will frequently debate each other on political issues in this segment, which occasionally gets heated. The second segment is usually the guest segment where the two will interview and talk with a guest who is typically a celebrity, politician, or other notable figure. If the show was unable to secure a guest appearance for that day, they instead will take calls from Patreon supporters who can chat with the duo for around fifteen minutes. The final segment is the "wildcard" segment where Jacobs and Newman will discuss anything that comes to their mind. This segment is also used for thanking Patreon supporters, giving updates on the show's status, and for other announcements. The show ends with a farewell from Jacobs and Newman: "We hoped you enjoyed our yak!" with a title card depicting a yak waving at the audience. These segments are not always definitive and will sometimes bleed into each other.
