The Roman Empire began as the Roman Republic, founded in 509 BC shortly after Etruscan rule was ended by a coalition of italic tribes, dominated by the Latin city of Rome, though the Romans never fully assimilated any of their neighbors but several languages in proximity to Rome are endangered.
