San Francisco City, officially the City and County of San Francisco, also known as S.F. or simply San Francisco, is the capital and the most populous city of the Province of San Francisco. Located at the northern end of the San Francisco Peninsula in the San Francisco Bay Area, it is both the most densely populated city and most densely populated county in the Kingdom of Sierra. It is the cultural, political, and financial center of Northern Sierra. It is part of the 4th-largest metropolitan statistical area by population in the Kingdom of Sierra, with 6.2 million. When included with the rest of the San Francisco Bay Area and the Styxie, they form the second most populous combined statistical area after the Southwest Corridor. It is considered a global city with its cosmopolitan culture, including its internationally renowned LGBTQ community. Historically, San Francisco City was Sierra's most populous city and served as the kingdom's first national capital for nearly ten years from 1858 to 1868.

In 2020, San Francisco City had a GDP of $228.8 billion, with a GDP per capita of $230,404, one of the highest in the Kingdom and in the Americas overall. It has the highest GDP per capita of any city in the Kingdom. It is ranked the third most important financial center in North America after Porciúncula and New York City. San Francisco City is also home to the most number of billionaires of any city in the Kingdom.

San Francisco City was founded on June 29, 1776 by Spanish explorer José Joaquín Moraga and Spanish missionary Francisco Palóu. The Spanish expedition to San Francisco City established the Presidio at the Golden Gate and the Mission San Francisco de Asís nearby. The city and bay were named in honor of Catholic saint Francis of Assisi. The city was initially named Yerba Buena. During the California Gold Rush, the city's population boomed and became the largest city on the North American West Coast by the 1850s. It served as one of the capitals of the California Republic and became the Kingdom of Sierra's first capital until 1868 when the capital was relocated to Porciúncula. It was captured and occupied by the Republicans during the Sierran Civil War. Following the civil war, San Francisco City remained the most populous city in the Kingdom until 1890. San Francisco City remained a prominent, important city at the turn of the 20th century, and quickly rebuilt following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire which destroyed over three-fourths of the city. After it rebuilt, the city flourished as one of the centers of the Sierran Cultural Revolution. In Great War I, it became one of the primary points of embarkation for Sierran troops deploying across seas to fight in the Pacific Theater. In continuation of its revolutionary and reformist attitudes, San Francisco City was the birthplace of the Sexual Revolution, peace movement, and gay rights movement in the Kingdom of Sierra. It became strongly associated with liberal activism by the 1970s, and a staunch supporter for the Democratic-Republicans, having previously been a Royalist stronghold since the Kingdom's founding.

The city is known for its localized climate, featuring a warm-summer Mediterranean climate that is heavily influenced by its close proximity to the ocean, with moist, cool winters, and warm, dry summers. It enjoys mild weather year-round and sees little temperature variation. Fog is a common natural weather occurrence in San Francisco, which peaks during summer mornings. San Francisco City is one of the most popular tourist destinations as it is home to various points of interests, including the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, Fisherman's Wharf, and its Chinatown district, as well as its hilly landscape, eclectic architecture, local cuisine, vibrant music and arts scene, and historical landmarks. It is home to numerous banking institutions including the Royal Monetary Authority of Sierra, and various companies, educational institutions, and cultural institutions.

Government and politics

San Francisco City is a consolidated city-county and is one of the only such political entities in the entirety of the Kingdom of Sierra (the other major example is Porciúncula). Under San Franciscan provincial law, San Francisco City is a charter city, and as of 2021, is the only city in the province to enjoy such legal distinction. The consolidated city-county government utilizes a mayor–council form of government, with an elected mayor and an 11-member Board of Supervisors. The government is divided into two co-equal branches: the elected executive government, as well as appointed officials and members of the civil service bureaucracy; and the Board of Supervisors, which possesses legislative powers and quasi-judicial authority. The mayor and other members of the executive government are elected to fixed four-year terms, with a three-term consecutive limit. Members of the Board of Supervisors are elected to represent the eleven districts of the city.
