THOR is a moderd mortar round developed over the MAPAM technology. Traditional airburst mortar rounds fitted with a proximity fuze disperse fragments in nearly every direction. This decreases the mortar´s lethality as over 50 percent of the fragments are scattered upwards. The new mortar round THOR has a unique design combining different shapes, materials and fragmentation sizes to attain the desired effect on target. Being able to choose the style of fragmentation not only delivers tailored lethality, but also control of fragment velocity.

THOR is designed and manufactured in Skandinavia by Saab Dynamics.

Features[edit | edit source]

Precission[edit | edit source]

  • Spheres can be optmised for range and lethality
  • Controlled safety zones to protect own troopes, as well as to avoid collateral damage
  • Designed to concentrate the fragments towards the ground for 20 percent less fragmentation loss - the result being twice the effect in target area
  • Higher angle target approach in the final part of the trajectory to focus fragments towards the ground

Performance[edit | edit source]

  • Lethality approximately 200 percent of a standard 120mm round
  • Adaptable design due to the flexibility of using a modular approach
  • Optional enhanced blast effect
  • Lower lifecycle costs and logistical footprint versus a standard 120mm round
  • Safe to handle with Insensitive Munitions (IM)
  • Range approximately 8,000 m

Modularity[edit | edit source]

  • Cylindrical central body design to enhance the lethality effect
  • Chamber configuration can be modified depending on the set target
  • Adaptable fragment shapes and quantities
  • Centre of gravity can be adapted and the ballistic performance remains similar
